Vengence change

In recent tanking news, @ghostcrawler tweeted that there will be a vengeance change in the future coming. The twitter post said that in 10 man vengeance will be capped at 30% of health and 25man capped at 50% of health, when he originally posted this people were outraged, and all he said was if you run the numbers then you will see that its not a big change. That’s exactly what I am going to break down today.

hp = health
vc= vengeance cap
dtps1 = damage taken per second (moving average)
dtps2 = damage taken per second (raw damage)
hp*.5= vc
vc*.98 = dtps1

For our purposes we don’t need dtps2, but I included it so you can get an idea of how it calculates, each n value dictates a second. Damage over 20 seconds divided by 20.

dtps1 = (dtps21 + dtps22….dtps219 + dtps220)/20

I tried posting this but couldn’t get subscript to work so its supposed to be dtps2 sub 1, so on and so forth.

Time to substitute in an HP value I will go with 800,000 as that is a viable number for when this change will go into effect.

800000*.5= vc
400000*.98 = dtps1
392000= dtps1

For vengeance cap to activate it would be at around 392000 damage taken per second over the 20 second period to activate the cap. Now remembering how vengeance works if you are hit for 100k 19 out of 20 seconds and then 1m (damage before being mitigated) for 1 second, this would change the moving average. The only times where vengeance would cap in the future are in situations where fights are being single tanked, specifically a hit to protection Paladins. Additionally other situations that this cap would have an effect are fights with moderate damage and then large hits that need large cooldowns.

Recount vs. Skada

One thing that I wanted to touch upon in recent days is the difference between skada and recount; two popular DPS meter addons, some people don’t understand the difference between the two so I am going to touch upon it.

Recount uses a method, which calculates damage done over the period of time that one is dealing damage.

DPS = DD / ADT

Skada uses a method that calculates damage done over the course of a fight damaging the boss or not.

DPS = DD/ T

This doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I was looking at a video the other day of a boss kill where people were commenting about how come, someone’s DPS was so low if they’re an Unholy DK. I didn’t say anything and considered them noobs as they didn’t know what they were looking at, I talked with some other people and I realized that it is a common misconception about how DPS meters work. This person in the video was fighting lei shen and the meter being used was recount. In the lei shen encounter the boss has two transition phases when damage from dots are still taken over the course of the transition. So this DK left their dots up and while everyone else was standing still and the meters stopped calculating DPS for the DK’s their dots continued to tick and lower there DPS on the meters. On recount this lowers the DPS as they aren’t actively attacking the boss during the period, vs. Skada where everyone’s DPS is dropping and DK’s are falling at a slower rate for doing damage. In this situation recount seems to be the lacking addon, but they both have their perks, as recount has better breakdown of abilities used and shows live graphs.

Festerblighting

Festerblight is a newer method for UH death knights. The first night I switched from a tank to a DPS I was reading up on what I needed to do to festerblight. I went to raid that night and did abysmal DPS as I didn’t understand and found no specific guides with explicit rules on what to do. In this post I will outline when and when not to use the festerblight method.

Festerblight works like this, strong diseases are applied as they snap shot stats and once strong diseases are applied you refresh using festerblight.

How to use:

Make sure you apply fresh diseases by using, (outbreak or plague strike.) don’t use unholy blight to apply diseases this as it keeps reapplying diseases every second for 10 seconds so this is not ideal as it might overwrite your diseases.

Note:
Festerblight does not apply new diseases and just adds time to the diseases.

USE:
When you have 3 of 4 conditions below, up at a given time, I tend to wait until everything lines up which is about a minute into the fight. Festerblight is not idea during lust, so off the pull lust I wait to apply my diseases when I have all 4 conditions lined up.

Trinket 1 Proc
Trinket 2 Proc
Rune of Fallen Crusader! Is virtually a must.
Strength Potion, I tend to use it if.

DON’T USE:

When the boss is almost dead and it isn’t worth spending the resources on festerblight.
Discontinuing festerblighting when you will defeat the boss within 30 seconds of your diseases falling off.

I recommend using Weakauras to track your trinket procs.
Also a addon called DKdiseases which will let you know when diseases are stronger or weaker than current diseases

10 vs. 25

The conversation that is brought up from time to time is that, 25 is harder then 10 and vice versa. I have had the experience of being in a top-50 25 man guild and a top-50 10 man guild, this being said I will talk about my personal experience and talk about the pro’s and cons in my opinion.

I will start with why 25 man is hard. 25 man usually has another mechanic compared to 10 man, additionally 25 man has a history of having a harder time beating tight enrages compared to 10 man. Sometimes 10 and 25 man have the same requirements from their raiders damage wise and this is an advantage to 10 man in my opinion. In 10 man it is easier to manipulate the raid to increase damage as 25 man the only way to manipulate the damage is take out a healer or get some more gear.

10 man is more difficult when it comes to asking players to executing mechanics, as on 25 man 3 people can get resed and on 10 man only 1 can get reseed, so it is more vital to not make mistakes. Additionally mechanics are sometimes harder for 10 man players because there isn’t always a way around things like in 25 man. A prime example is heroic Warlord Blackhorn was one of the most difficult fights as each time someone needed to soak it had the be done by 2-3 players and the requirement was the same on 25 man this made it hard to execute the mechanics without the ship blowing although the beserker timer was virtually a non issue compared to on 25 man which was a DPS check.

Now that I have told my opinion I’ll let you decide which one is harder, as they both have there difficult sides.

Cooldowns

So I didn’t have much to write about in this weeks rendition of my blog post so I decided that I could talk about and decided that something I could touch upon is how to speak up when making a raid call for an external cool down and what to properly say. This is one of the things I tried to work on during raid this week as it was something that caused a raid wipe the week before. First things first is coordinating with your other tanks what possible cool downs they will go after first and when will they need these cool downs. Another thing that is a must in a 25 man raid environment is to have an add-on which allows you to track which externals have been used and know which healer is healing. It isn’t productive if it says your healers external is off of cool down if they are on the bench. Next is the phonics that goes along with making a raid call.

For example calling out PAIN SUPPRESS ME I’M GONNA DIE, is not the ideal raid call. Concise raid calls are what best as it allows for the healers to react quicker and causes less confusion. When calling out the external you need always end with saying your name, it is a common occurrence for mumble to be hectic on some progression fights. Next use abbreviations, for the cool down you need, Pain suppression = ps Guardian spirit = gs so on so forth. Make sure you are calling out the healer in which you need the cool down from and start by saying their name make shortcuts in their name adellina is someones name in our guild we call him adel. In short if I need an external, I will look at my Hermes add-on and see who has an external available, then I see that pain suppression is available. I quickly call “adel PS cantoo.”

Sometimes it is a tricky place for tanks to preemptively call out externals like adel PS cantoo in 15, I always make sure if I have made a mistake or am missing a cool down for something I know I will die if I don’t call out for an external. So I will call out for an external, adel cantoo needs ps in 15, then I follow it up adel ps cantoo its not the easiest thing for healers to track time while healing as a tank its your job to make sure you help the healers out to the best of your abilities. As in the end this will help you.

Keybindings

If you are a keyboard turner or just click on your cooldowns I would like to share my experience about key bindings and possibly help you. So I used to play on a laptop and I found it easiest to click on cooldowns and potions, but I eventually made the transition to a real keyboard and then a real desktop. I was in one of those places where I was applying to guilds and they asked me to talk about my key bindings. At the time I wasn’t a seasoned raider, so I didn’t have many key bindings, and that’s where I realized it needed to change. Fortunately I was accepted to a decent guild, which gave me an opportunity to jump into the raiding scene. Unfortunately I didn’t change my key bindings yet. While I was on trial I decided to change my key bindings, and I messed up horribly on heroic shannox who was a joke.

First lesson is when trying to make the transition to key bindings try to do it when there is downtime not on a Tuesday before raid where you can’t practice, additionally it would be best to switch while farming content and not actively progressing.

So I eventually got attuned to using my key bindings and while it felt uncomfortable it was better than clicking. The next thing to do, which I didn’t was make sure you use your mouse and bind the side buttons as modifier keys, such as alt and shift. A lot of key binding guides I have saw talk about replacing your asdw keys, which are movement keys and get rid of them all together. This is the next mistake I made, as I was tanking Ragnaros and could position him properly, without turning my back. Now if you feel more comfortable moving the asdw keys to sdfe keys instead this is a viable option, although I have played so many mmo’s that I am accustom to asdw and don’t feel comfortable changing as I tried it before.

The last thing that I want to mention is when switched to a Razer Naga I orientated my key binds to match up with the layout of the keyboard and it felt much more comfortable, I feel like if I didn’t have the Naga I would be helpless. I strongly recommend it.

Macros I use

So I was raiding this week and had to make a few macros for taunting, and thought it was important to share, as it is an important part of raiding. I would like to go over every single macro command that I have used, but this week I am out of town and have no access to this. I will be going off of my head for these macros.

Focus macro:

/cast [@focus] taunt

If you are going to taunt for focus make sure you have the thing your taunting focused. If you forget like I do I use target macro.

Target macro:

/target enemy

/cast taunt

/targetlasttarget

A lot of people don’t know about the target last target macro. Now if you want to announce that you are taunting the enemy you can add this line to the target macro after the cast while the enemy is still focused.

/s taunted %t

Now that we have this out of the way, I used to use clique for battle res and also for heroic Sha of Fear, but I have moved over to the mouseover macro as it is more convenient as I am not a healer.

Mouseover macro:

/cast [target=mouseover] raise ally

/run local n = UnitIsPlayer(“mouseover”) and UnitName(“mouseover”) if n then SendChatMessage(“Raise Ally cast on you!”,”WHISPER”,nil,n) end

There are many more macros that can be used to better your game play, like using trinkets together or any realm of possibility like modifying the focus macro to interrupt if the enemy exists.
